Abstract
The current research investigated whether jealousy can be beneficial for a committed
romantic relationship, as has previously been postulated by evolutionary theories. Contrary to
most studies on jealousy, this research looked at the consequences of jealousy for the
romantic partner. Study 1 sought to identify potential ways in which the jealousy of one
partner could be either beneficial or detrimental to relationship processes and outcomes,
investigating whether it relates to the use of relationship maintenance behaviour by the other
partner, perceived commitment and autonomy. Results indicate that behavioural jealousy is
negatively related to perceived commitment and autonomy. Study 2 sought to extend these
findings by employing an experimental design. Half of the participants had to think of an
instance in which their partner was jealous and the other half had to think of a non-jealousy
provoking control event. Results indicate that there was no significant difference between the
two groups. There was however a difference in mood after the manipulation. Moreover,
results of Study 1 were replicated within the jealousy condition, as behavioural jealousy was
again negatively related to autonomy. The results are discussed with regards to the original
question of whether jealousy is beneficial or detrimental for a relationship
