Abstract

This thesis investigates the influence of Dutch protests against U.S. missiles deployment in the Netherlands on the diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and the U.S. from 1979 to 1985. After agreeing to station 48 cruise missiles in the Netherlands, a massive protest movement arose. Using extensive primary and secondary literature research, this study looks into the potential tensions that the decision generated. It focuses on the dialogues between Dutch and American officials and the actions of American ambassadors in the Netherlands. The findings reveal a difficult political landscape in the Dutch government with significant internal party divisions and a recurrent postponement of the missile decision for six years. The U.S. demonstrated patience, acknowledging the Dutch government’s predicament. The protest movement did influence Dutch-American diplomacy due to the repeated postponement of the missile placement decision, but it did not substantially alter the overall positive bilateral relations.
