Mainstreaming climate adaptation into urban planning: An in-depth study into Dutch urban planning in relation to the impact of climate change

dc.description.abstractThe Netherlands will face climate change effects more rapidly over the coming decades. Furthermore, the housing shortage will lead to new houses being built during the coming years. Flexibility and adaptability of these new houses are required to be sustainable and adaptive. In this research, sea level rise, pluvial and fluvial flooding have been studied in relation to the development of a new town located in the low-lying Zuidplaspolder. This polder is the lowest area of the Netherlands. By investigating this polder with regard to changing climate conditions, the use of mainstreaming climate adaptation into urban planning was a valuable theory to analyse the integration of climate adaptation. The three different phases (understanding, planning and managing) of urban planning were analysed in order to identify the most important factors that influence mainstreaming climate adaptation into urban planning. In this case, the limited financial resources from various stakeholder for adaptation measures, a lack of laws and regulations, communication between stakeholders, individual awareness and knowledge on climate adaptation were the dominant factors for mainstreaming climate adaptation into the urban planning of the Zuidplaspolder. By taking these factors into account, the mainstreaming of climate adaptation into urban planning could be enhanced.en_US
