From struggles to strengths: Understanding the influence of intersectionality on the work adjustment process of Central and Eastern European migrant women in the Netherlands

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the role of intersectionality in the process of work adjustment of Central and Eastern European (CEE) migrant women in The Netherlands. Three main objectives focused on the intersection between gender and migration background guides this research: to explore the unique work adjustment experiences of CEE migrant women in the Netherlands, to identify the specific challenges and barriers faced by CEE migrant women in the Dutch labour market, and to examine the role of work adjustment factors as proposed by Black et al. (1991). Using semi-structured interviews, the experiences of 19 CEE migrant women from 8 different countries were collected. Thematic analysis and abductive logic were applied to identify the common patterns and themes. The findings revealed that the influence of gender and migrant background on the work adjustment process differed, depending on whether they were perceived separately or intersecting. Gender was predominantly associated with negative experiences, such as encountering sexism and facing gender-specific expectations. The background of CEE nationality played a role in interpreting cultural differences and was perceived as a source of pride and an obstacle. The intersection of gender and migration background translated into instances of stigmatisation while simultaneously being recognised as a source of resilience when navigating the work adjustment process. This study contributes to the existing literature on intra-European migration by shedding light on the specific experiences of CEE migrant women in The Netherlands within the context of work adjustment. This research’s findings are relevant for policymakers and organisational professionals, as they underscore the need for gender-specific policies and enhanced cross-cultural knowledge in order to foster a more inclusive work environment.
