Abstract

This thesis focuses on the differences in organisation between a gated community on one hand, and a kampung community on the other hand, and how this affects the social relationships between the two communities. The research for this thesis was conducted at both the Gated Community Permata Semeru and Kampung Welirang. The main goal of this study was to comprehend how these two communities operate in both sites and how it affects the lives of the locals. Through the concepts of water distribution, waste collection and security, the differences in organisation between the two communities was examined. The phenomenon of “gated communities” is one where mostly people with higher incomes are residing and is known for its fenced characteristics. Later studies show that the idea of a gated community also has a downside to it, it can have social segregation or social exclusion as a consequence and it can influence the way people living in gated communities interact with people outside of it. In this research, the influence on social relationships between both neighbourhoods is examined closely.
