The Influence of Individual Embeddedness on the Acceptance of Trust Violation: The Moderating Effect of the Severity of Trust Violation and Self-Monitoring

dc.description.abstractPurpose – The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between an individual’s embeddedness and whether or not one accepts a trust violation. This relationship is specified by adding two moderators: self-monitoring and severity of trust violation. Design/methodology/approach – The quantitative research is based on two Waves of data collection: one network-oriented questionnaire and one scenario-based questionnaire. The sample consists of BAs, BBs, and RMs, three job functions, working within the company at issue. Polinode, an online network analysis tool, and SPSS will be used to test the stated hypotheses. Findings – No support could be found for all the hypotheses stated in this research. However, the analysis did yield a significant direct and negative effect of the severity of trust violation on the acceptance of trust violation. Moreover, results showed that, regardless of the perception of the severity of the trust violation stated in the scenario, respondents were likely not to accept the trust violation and to not work with the trust violator in the future. Research limitations/implications –Polinode did not allow for confirmation of the existence of a relationship. Furthermore, this research was mainly focused on one department within the company. Including multiple departments could have led to more interesting results. Finally, only an integrity-based trust violation was tested in the scenario. Further research could extend this research by including all types of trust violation (competence-based trust violation and benevolence-based trust violation). Furthermore, more general research needs to be conducted on the relationship between individual embeddedness and acceptance of trust violation using a higher N. Recommendations – The company should make employees more aware of their self-monitoring behaviour by, for example, offering a self-monitoring test and self-evaluations, in order to show credible and consistent behaviour, but to be able to promote innovation and innovative performance as well. Originality/value – This study is among the first to test the relationship between an individual’s embeddedness and (acceptance of) trust violation. Moreover, it contributes to the limited amount of research that uses self-monitoring as a psychology construct in relation to network analysis.
