Abstract
This thesis explores the subtle yet profound impact of colonialism on Dutch society, focusing on how it has shaped the experiences of the Indonesian-Dutch diaspora. While the legacy of colonialism is deeply rooted in the Netherlands, its effects are not always overtly visible. The phenomenon of Indisch Zwijgen (Dutch-Indonesian silence) highlights this subtlety, as it refers to the suppression of discourse surrounding colonial history. Independent artists of Indonesian descent are breaking this silence by using art as a medium to express complex emotions and engage with their heritage. This research examines the work of six Indonesian-Dutch creatives—Leatemia, Lopulissa, Pelupessy, Mulder & Groot, and Latoel—who navigate their bicultural identities through various artistic forms. By focusing on individual artistic processes and motivations rather than institutional narratives, this study offers a fresh perspective on how the Indonesian-Dutch diaspora connects with its historical past. The research employs a qualitative, multi-method approach, including online content analysis, in-depth interviews, and thematic analysis of interview transcripts.
