Abstract

The Harry Potter book series is named after the eponymous male character who is also the main protagonist of its narrative. Nonetheless, there are also key female characters, such as Hermione Granger, who should not be overlooked. Many scholars have argued that Hermione Granger is an interesting and unique character who can be seen as more than a sidekick. This is true because she takes on many roles, a mother figure, a love interest, but most importantly a heroine. This thesis has analysed Hermione Granger in three novels: Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The character study shed light on how she is a strong, independent, and inspiring heroine in her unique way – analysing how gender is portrayed and whether there are challenges posed on gender. Past research has primarily focused on comparing male characters to female characters, having less research focused solely on female characters and how they can be seen as unique heroines. Therefore, this thesis will attempt to clarify how Hermione Granger can be seen as a unique heroine despite the challenges posed by her gender.
