Abstract

Abstract The field of AI ethics has been flooded with guidelines and principles over the past decade. Although important for progress in the field, this approach - referred to as ’guideline-AI ethics’ in this thesis - has notable limitations. As an alternative, relational AI ethics is now put forward. This thesis examines the feasibility of relational AI ethics through a literature review and comparative case analysis. The literature review concerns relational ethics and the application of that approach to AI. In the comparative case analysis, the guideline-AI ethics and relational AI ethics perspectives are compared when applied to the case of the Dutch algorithm register. Findings indicate that while relational AI ethics is not feasible as a stand-alone approach, integrating it with guideline-AI ethics may enhance the field of AI ethics. Future research should investigate how best to combine these two approaches.
