Migration and urbanization is noticeable in the Indonesian city Semarang. In most cases a whole family is involved in this process of migration is. The goal of this research is to contribute to theories about family migration and child migration. The main question is: ‘What is the position of children in the migration process of families living in the boarding house at the Jalan Tlogo Timun in Semarang?’. At this so called 'boarding house' live mainly migrants. The theory explains that the migration decision is made by the family and the aim to optimize the benefits and spread risks for them. Also the children can influence this decision in several ways. The method of a qualitative case study is used to answer the research question. The data is gained by semi structured interviews, mostly with migrants living at the boarding house. Their stories were very personal, which was very useful for this research that depends on own perception and experience. The situations of the respondents were divided in two categories: 'children migrating with their family' and 'children living without their parents'. Their amount of influence in the process differs in each situation. It depends in first place on the age of the children, at an older age they are more assertive. In the second place it depends on if the parents are very authoritarian or more open minded. The outcome of the migration also differs in each situation but it seems it succeed for all the respondents.en_US
