Abstract
The research question of my thesis is: “To what extent does the reception of the various editions and versions of Sara Burgerhart differ with regard to the gender image that is outlined in the novel?” In order to answer this question, I studied the receptions of two editions in addition to the original epistolary novel from 1782: the 1905 edition of the Wereldbibliotheek and the 2021 retranslation by Tonnus Oosterhoff.
The conclusion that emerged from this is that there was little reception material to be found from the twentieth century about the Wereldbibliotheek edition. The material that is available does not discuss the gender image. In the reception from the twenty-first century, the connection is often made between the eighteenth century and the twenty-first century in both editions. All in all, the reception tells us a lot about the gender image from the time in which the reviews were written.
