Abstract

By taking a conflict sensitive approach, environmental organisations aim to contribute to peace and security in the regions they operate in. This has is also the case for partners within the Tropenbos International (TBI) network, as they aim to move towards environmental peacebuilding contributions by including conflict sensitivity in their local approaches. With their focus on indigenous peoples and local communities, they dive into a lesser known part of environmental peacebuilding on a local level. This research aims to better understand how an environmental organisation working on the local level can contribute to environmental peacebuilding through this conflict sensitivity approach. By learning from practitioners in the various contexts that TBI partners are operating in, this research creates an understanding of their knowledge and activities. Combined with research of TBI documents and interviews with practitioners from related organisations, this shows the importance of (1) creating a strong contextual understanding to strengthen the interventions, (2) base the interventions on local knowledge and (3) use traditional mechanisms to navigate through the existing power dynamics in the specific regions. In this way the conflict sensitive approaches can boost the contributions to environmental peacebuilding on a local level.
