dc.description.abstract | This research explores which normative- and mimetic pressures drive the initiation of the sustainable business model innovation process towards service-dominant product-service systems from an institutional theory perspective. This explorative research conducts a multiple ‘mini-case’ study in which both large enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises from different industries were examined. The informants interviewed for this research were involved with the initiation of the sustainable business model innovation process of their company towards use-oriented or result-oriented product-service systems. This research found evidence for the exitance of normative pressures as drivers for the initiation of sustainable business model innovations towards service-dominant product-service systems. Our results showed that pressures stemming from foundations that aim to stimulate recycling, stimulate companies to innovate their product and accordingly drive the initiation of the SBMI process towards SDPSS. Results also showed that organizations with the focus on promoting or facilitating circular economy practices, drive the initiation of SBMI towards SDPSS in companies. This study found no evidence of experienced mimetic pressure to initiate the SBMI process towards SDPSS by companies. The results on the other hand do suggest that pioneers might experience little to no mimetic pressure and are more driven by factors as customer demand, as there have to be perceived as legitimate competitors and peers present, to experience mimetic pressures from them. Therefore, we suggest that the influence of mimetic pressures as drivers for SBMI towards SDPSS is moderated for being a pioneer or follower in the industry. | |
