Abstract

The Dutch national curriculum committee for classical languages has proposed a new central exam format in which students will be assessed on unseen Latin texts, marking a major shift in assessment practice. As little research has been conducted in this area, the committee has called for further study. This research investigates the strategies employed by four year-5 students when completing a test on an unseen Latin passage designed in accordance with Domain A of the new exam program. Using the think-aloud protocol, detailed insights were gained into their reading and reasoning processes. The results show that students can successfully complete this type of task. Most relied on the questions to guide their reading, while constructing meaning primarily through vocabulary knowledge, supplemented by dictionary use, grammatical knowledge, verbal reasoning, and background knowledge. Literary knowledge was applied less often and with limited success. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of assessing unseen texts and provide implications for teaching practice and future research.
