Abstract
This thesis studies the case of the exhibition Philip Guston Now, which was postponed in 2020 in response to Black Lives Matter and eventually held in 2022. This thesis aims to explore the responsibilities of museums in creating inclusive narratives by using the following research question: How do the narratives created by the museums for the Klansmen paintings in the Philip Guston Now exhibition, address the theme of social inequality? Bourdieu serves as the focus in the thematic analysis of the wall texts about the artworks in the exhibition and art critic reviews of the exhibition. The thesis suggests that the narrative in the exhibition addresses social equality by giving a social contextual background but neglects practical implementations of inclusivity. By engaging more with the practical aspects of inclusivity, museums can make art exhibitions that contribute more thoroughly to social equality.
