This bachelor’s thesis aims to examine how the Netflix show Heartstopper, based on Alice Oseman’s webcomic and graphic novels of the same name, challenges our Western heteronormative society in a variety of ways. By using an intersectional framework of queer theory and gender theory, this thesis examines characters, scenes, and the story itself. It demonstrates how Heartstopper successfully creates and depicts queer characters who resist existing hetero- and monosexual norms. Similarly, the show creates actively anti-heteronormative scenes and stories that are sometimes activistic.
