Abstract

The current agricultural system farms mostly unsustainable. Degrowth is a countermovement that aims for an equitable downscaling of production and consumption that increases human well-being and enhances ecological conditions, such as in agriculture. Nevertheless, farmers who farm according to degrowth’s principles face many barriers when amplifying. This Master’s thesis therefore researches one aspect that could potentially influence the barriers, namely, organised networks. Through semi-structured interviews and observations, I analysed three Dutch organised networks: het Agroforestry Netwerk Nederland, het Agroecologie Netwerk, and Toekomstboeren. The results show that the networks mostly influence the social capital of the farmers and influence the practical barriers the farmers face. However, the influence of the networks on the political barriers is limited. In sum, the influence of the organised networks on amplifying agricultural degrowth initiatives is limited, as the political barriers are the most influential.
