Abstract
Temporal focus, the cognitive orientation towards the past, present, or future, has been recognized as a significant psychological construct with implications for decision-making, planning and goal setting. However, little is known about the dynamic nature of temporal focus and how it is influenced by situational factors, such as nearing the end of a term. This study examines the influence of nearing end of term on temporal focus among Dutch water authority board members. Using data from 28 water authorities from 2009 to 2014, the results show that temporal focus is an individual characteristic that is subject to situational factors to some extent. This insight advances our knowledge of the complexity and flexibility of temporal focus as a psychological construct.
