dc.description.abstractThe Ostrogothic Kingdom has often been characterised as sitting on the crossroads of history; on one hand, it maintained the cultural and administrative traditions of the late western Roman empire, while simultaneously being one of the early medieval "barbarian" successor kingdoms. This tension is reflected in the coins produced under Ostrogothic rule, whose design was influenced by the shifting political climate of its time. This thesis places the coinage of the Ostrogoths in its political context from the early pseudo-imperial coins of Theodoric to the final, royal issues of Baduila and Theia. It also compares these coins to late Roman and pre-Ostrogothic Italian coins from 455 onwards to frame the coins in a diachronic perspective.en_US
