Abstract

This bachelor’s thesis examines antisemitism in the British Labour Party during Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, using theories from scholars like David Rich, David Hirsh, and Gidley et al. It analyzes how antisemitism is perpetuated through 1) the “oppressor-oppressed binary,” 2) the “politics of position,” and 3) the dual identification of Jews with capitalism, colonialism, and the Israeli-Arab conflict. The study explores Rich’s view that oversimplifying the Israeli-Palestinian conflict leads to ignoring other forms of oppression, Hirsh’s theory that such alignment prevents recognizing antisemitism, and Gidley’s link between Jews, capitalism, and colonialism. Examples include Corbyn’s praise for Hamas and Hezbollah, his defense of an antisemitic mural, Jackie Walker’s claim about Jews and the slave trade, and Naz Shah's call to relocate Israelis. The thesis underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of antisemitism and a firm stand against all prejudice.
