Abstract
In this project, I aim to develop a design architecture for a chatbot that boosts the virtue of courage of people in the domain of psychological well-being. The project is focused on courage, as factors like lack of courage or embarrassment are among the things that hold people back on opening up about their problems. Improving courage levels in users is suggested to be one of the tools that can be used to break through the perceived stigma that surrounds talking about mental health issues. By reducing this stigma, mental health care can be more openly discussed, which can lead to great long term benefits for users struggling with mental health issues.
Research on mental health care and examining the appropriate ways to improve courage will be the first phase. The second phase will consist of the proposed design architecture of a chatbot that tries to positively stimulate courage, as well as educate users about mental health and support them in tackling these problems. The research on mental health care and stimulation of courage will be embedded in the behaviour of the chatbot.
The findings of this thesis support the idea of a courage stimulating chatbot system. Supported by both the psychological literature on courage and mental health care, as well as human-computer interaction theories, a design recommendation was given for such a chatbot system.
