Abstract
This thesis focuses on the relationship between ownership types and financial performance. This relationship is also tested on the influence of ownership concentration and sporting performance. With this topic, this thesis aims to close the gap between regular ownership theory and sports based ownership theory, specifically within the context of European football, and expand existing literature in that field. For this, the concepts of ownership types, ownership concentration, sporting performance and financial performance have been explained and used. For this, data has been collected that represent 110 football clubs from six football competitions in Europe. Where relationship between ownership types and financial performance turned out to be significant private ownership has a negative effect on financial performance. Specifically, institutional investors have a bigger negative influence on financial performance than other private ownership types. Stock-exchange owned clubs have a larger positive influence on financial performance than other public ownership types. These effects of ownership on financial performance are positively influenced by sporting performance. No evidence of influence by ownership concentration is found. These results mean that football club strategies cannot be compared to strategies in other industries. However, these results can be used within football for ownership-decision making and legislation
