Abstract
For decades China has claimed large parts of the South China Sea territory. As the East Asian state intruded on the sovereign maritime territory of some of its neighbors, the dispute escalated. This resulted in an issue that has drawn the attention of the international community, international institutions, and international relations thinkers. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the way in which two major powers, the United States and China, are able to maintain their influence in the region in the context of regional military alliances. This will be done in accordance with the existing theoretical concepts such as the international relations paradigms and concepts such as engagement and balancing of power.
