Abstract

Climate change has become an unavoidable conversation within the business of opera, particularly as simultaneous conversations position Earth’s environment and opera as “dying.” As a result, opera houses worldwide have restructured and experimented with interventions to increase sustainability and limit climate impact. However, no study has comprehensively charted these interventions, nor investigated their impact upon opera as an institution. Evaluating data gathered from fieldwork undertaken at three different, and geographically distinct, European opera houses, this thesis presents a holistic look at the impact of sustainability upon opera business models. Rooted within design-centric sustainable business model innovation theory, this thesis illustrates the successes and shortfalls of the present, ideates a hypothetical future through the presentation of ISOLDE 2.0, a new integrated business model for opera and sustainability, and suggests a hopeful future for the climate-opera space.
