dc.description.abstractThe same-sex marriage debate has been a highly controversial issue in both the United States and France and has been the source of conflict between socio-political groups. The shaping of the history and debate on marriage equality in both countries will be analyzed through the use of Fassin’s theory of models of citizenship. Furthermore, the rhetoric that is used in The New York Times to discuss these debates will be evaluated, compared, and contrasted. The results have shown to be slightly unexpected: While the debate in the United States has proven to be guided by gay conservatives, the debate in France has been guided by conservative progressives. The rhetoric used in The New York Times has proven to be reflective of the rhetoric used in the debates themselves, though The New York Times does, at times, force the American rhetoric onto the French debate.en_US
