This thesis is based on a systematic investigation of the development of the creative sector in Amsterdam from 1850 until 1900. The purpose of this inquiry was to map out the spatial development the creative sector. The distribution of creativity throughout the city was determined through quantification of creative businesses and shop locations in commercial address books. One of the observations was the active role and engagement of the urban bourgeoisie in directing these developments, by establishing cultural associations and institutions. In the late nineteenth century the creative sector further commercialized, which influenced the choice of shop locations for creative entrepreneurs. The institutional support of the bourgeoisie provided the sector with an oppositional force against commercialization. Therefore the thesis sheds light on the historic importance of the changing cultural practices of the urban bourgeoisie.en_US
