Abstract

This master thesis investigates how early-career Dutch pop musicians position themselves in relation to government subsidies, focusing on the values that influence their decisions whether to apply for funding. While subsidies are commonly granted in classical music and other more traditional art forms, structural support for pop musicians remains unusual within the Dutch music sector. The 2016 subsidy granted to the rock band De Staat, and the controversy it sparked, raised questions about whether public funds should support pop music at all. Yet, the opinions of pop musicians themselves on subsidies remain largely unexplored, particularly among early-career artists who may seek financial support to develop their careers. Through semi-structured interviews with five Dutch early-career pop musicians this study uncovers the motivations and values underlying their views on subsidies. These values will be categorized using Boltanski and Thévenot’s framework of seven worlds with their own sets of values. Keunen’s concept of the “alternative mainstream” will form a basis to start this research from and put the results in context. Results reveal a complex negotiation between ideals of autonomy and artistic integrity, and the financial pressures of working within the pop music sector. Furthermore, the study highlights a perceived disconnect between musicians’ needs and the priorities of funding bodies, which may deter artists from applying. These insights suggest that funding organizations might foster a more accessible relationship with pop musicians by branching out locally and addressing the unique characteristics and values of this sector. By prioritizing the voices of musicians, this research offers a critical perspective on the role of subsidies in the popmusic field and proposes avenues for refining cultural subsidy policies.
