Abstract
There is increased urgency to address environmental challenges and citizens worldwide are increasingly concerned about the damage done to the planet. CLSCs are able to address environmental concern about pollution, waste, and resource depletion. However, the full potential of CLSCs is not being unlocked. The reason for this is that there are important barriers, like limited inventory, recovery costs and cannibalization of sales, that hinder the value creation in CLSCs. When these barriers are part of balancing feedback loops, they create vicious cycles. In contrast to past research, which has taken a static view, in this research I will look at the dynamic behaviour of the system of CLSCs. This research will therefore validate the model of Schenkel et al. (2019) by quantifying it in order to simulate the dynamic system behaviour and uncover the effects of the vicious cycles on the value creation in CLSCs over time. The resulting insights of this research are useful for practice as they could help devise strategies to overcome vicious cycles and thus create more value in CLSCs and in the long run it could help to unlock the full potential of CLSCs.
