Abstract
As long-term retention of work-related E-learning usage has been observed to be low in a
variety of organisations, research was conducted in order to determine if Behaviour Change
Techniques (BCT) could successfully be implemented to invoke retention of usage. First, a
literature review focused on psychological constructs relating to technology usage continuance
intention is presented. Next, a study was conducted in which measurements of these
psychological constructs were taken from a group of work-related E-learning users. BCT were
selected to improve the psychological construct: ‘subjective norm’, through alteration of
descriptive- and injunctive normative perception. Finally, a field experiment was conducted in
which effectivity of implemented BCT on frequency of work-related E-learning technology
usage was measured. The results showed no significant effects of implemented BCT, but
interpretation of descriptive statistics gave some indication towards short-term effectivity of
implemented BCT. Due to low sample size and other limitations, no definitive conclusions
could be drawn. Stronger collaboration of social scientists and ICT-professionals is advised
when implementation of BCT into E-learning technology is investigated in future research.
