Abstract

This thesis investigates the phenomenon of the ‘fake past’ in Dutch, where the preterite (past tense) can be used to refer to present or future eventualities, defying traditional tense-aspect (TA) analysis. Building on the work of Haans and De Hoop (2023), this study offers a reanalysis of this linguistic feature using Klein’s (1994, 2009) and Bohnemeyer’s (1998, 2009, 2014) TA framework. Using data from the Spoken Dutch Corpus, pragmatic and modal functions of the ‘fake past’, such as evidentiality, politeness, and counterfactuality are also considered. Furthermore, parallels and distinctions in the cross-linguistic variation on fake tense are highlighted. Ultimately, the findings suggest that while the Dutch ‘fake past’ challenges standard temporal analyses, it remains a ‘real’ past reference, which becomes clear when analysed through the Kleinian framework. This research provides insights into the interaction between tense, aspect and modality, contributing to broader linguistic theory, and additionally, implications for second language acquisition are considered.
