This study explores whether motivation framing (i.e. framing messages according to the continuum of intrinsic-extrinsic motivation) influences mHealth users’ willingness to engage in the use of mHealth and in the monitored physical activity and whether this effect differs for users with different levels of health beliefs. The research design chosen for this study is an experimental design, with six conditions. One-hundred sixty (160) mHealth users were invited to participate in the experiment via the online platform Qualtrics. The data collected were anonymized and subjected to a multivariate analysis of covariance. The findings suggest that the interaction between Health Locus of Control (HLOC) and motivational framing did not influence intentions to continue engaging in physical activity and mHealth. Furthermore, it suggests that intrinsically framed messages have a stronger effect than extrinsically and neutrally framed messages on users’ engagement with mHealth and physical activity. In addition, extrinsically framed messages showed a weaker effect than neutrally framed messages on continued engagement with the app, and this effect did not show a significant difference in intention to continue physical activity.
