Abstract

Most organizations struggle to find suitable talent these days, a challenge likely to worsen. To address this, many are turning to AI, which enhances processes and supports staff. This paper explores how AI affects the psychological contract between employers and employees, using qualitative methods and thematic content analysis of science fiction novels. The study employs a comparative case study approach with three novels to develop new theory and understand future AI-human relationships. The three sci-fi novels highlight differences in context and relationships between humans and AI. The analysis reveals themes of bias, cooperation, and the content of the psychological contracts, emphasizing how societal perceptions and organizational influences shape human-AI interactions and the feasibility of equal partnerships. Bias against AI leads to unfair treatment and hinders trust, impacting the formation of a psychological contract. Cooperation requires mutual understanding and differing abilities between humans and AI. Context, influenced by societal norms and laws, plays a significant role in shaping the psychological contract. More research is needed to understand how AI can be an effective partner in this context.
