Abstract
Little Women (2019) is one adaptation among many popular period dramas that appeared on
the screen in the last few years. A common theme within these adaptations is that many have
some sense of feminism weaved into the story, in order to make it more appealing to a modern audience. This is also the case for the latest adaptation of Little Women. The societal expectations on women have vastly changed throughout time, and these differences can be
seen in the different adaptations. This thesis will take a look at both the portrayal of femininity in the original novel and the changes in two of its movie adaptations. It will offer a close examination of the portrayal of femininity in the characters of Meg and Amy March in both the novel Little Women (1868) as well as adaptations of the same novel from 1933 and 2019. It will examine how gender roles and feminine ideals have changed throughout history, and how the two different adaptations portray the femininity of these characters in different ways.
