Abstract

This research paper is based on the acknowledgements from literature regarding the significant importance of the agency of translation agents to develop a fuller understanding of the process of translation of management ideas. More specifically, the identity of the translation agents can be considered as key. Research focused on this understanding is increasing yet still relatively limited. By investigating external sustainability consultants (formally assigned translation agents) with the use of a qualitative research design, and the identity work perspective, this research seeks to contribute to further close this research gap by investigating the possible malleability of the self-identity of translation agents. The results of this research show how these translation agents use identity work within a context of tension between desired and perceived outcomes, together with indeed some of these translation agents’ self-identities being relatively malleable.
