The impact of innovation on industry structure change Environmental requirements set for changes and innovations in various sectors. The Dutch government has set a target to achieve a carbon dioxide emission reduction of 49%. One of the industries that has to innovate is the Dutch automotive industry. This industry is experiencing innovation because of the transition from ICE vehicles to electric vehicles. This research examined the impact of this innovation on the industry structure and the changes it entails. Data was collected by conducting semi-structured interviews. The expected outcome was that the extent of innovation has an impact in the extent of industry structure change. Hypothesis: “companies that experience a greater extent of innovation, also experience a greater extent of industry structure change”. The difference in extent of innovation can be explained by a difference in adaptability to innovation. This research contributed to the knowledge on how industry structures change: not only the type of innovation (McGahan, 2004) defines the extend of industry structure change, but the extent of innovation has an impact on the extent of industry structure change.en_US
