Abstract

This study explores the dissemination of Covid-19 misinformation to and from the rhetoric of Willem Engel. Addressing the question: In what way has misinformation—including conspiracy theories—related to Covid-19 spread to and from the rhetoric of Willem Engel and how does this relate to the debate on globalisation vs. Americanisation? This was done through answering sub-questions on theoretical concepts, the societal impact of Engel’s actions in the Netherlands, and exploring connections between Engel and non-Dutch sources of Covid-19 misinformation. Evidence for links between Engel and certain American organisations was inconclusive, although similarities in approaches suggest the possibility of information transfer. Not all instances of transfer involved transformation of the cultural product, challenging long-held beliefs in the field of Cultural Transfer. Engel’s case study was placed within the framework of globalisation, also highlighting the effects of misinformation on democratic governance and the role played by social media.
