Abstract

This research aims to study the ways in which formal and informal institutions were utilized by the Dutch government and European Commission in times of uncertainty and their positive or negative effects on Dutch energy network providers. In doing so a better understanding is created on current factors hindering the progress of the energy transition and possible changes necessary to better facilitate said transition. The data for this research was collected through semi-structured interviews aimed at researching the personal experiences of the respondents. In total fourteen new interviews were held and in addition seven interviews from previous research were utilized. Out of all the researched influences it became apparent that legislation holds the largest influence over the focal organization. Other researched influences include shareholder activism and the presence of governmental guidance. The findings of this research indicate the importance of adequately designed legislation that promotes the creation of sustainability. Further research on this topic should further investigate governmental influence outside of the Netherlands in order to get a better understanding of the possible changes needed to realize the goals set forth by the European Green Deal.
