Abstract

This research explores how the dynamics among stakeholders in digital platform ecosystems (DPEs) enhance value creation in addressing the grand challenge of food waste. Based on a qualitative case study of the food waste platform Too Good To Go (TGTG), this research investigates how interactions among stakeholders, alignment of objectives and digital technology contribute to a sustainable outcome. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews with employees of TGTG and partner businesses, as well as secondary sources including industry and NGO reports. The findings indicate that value is created in the form of trust-based relationships, alignment of objectives and collaborative interactions among the stakeholders on the platform. In addition, digital processes, including algorithmic matching, integrated user feedback, are important for iterative value creation and expanding market reach. Also, the research identifies challenges relating to operational constraints and changing priorities of partner businesses, act as challenges to long-term collaboration. This research contributes to the literature by reformulating value creation in DPEs as a decentralized, dynamic process driven by stakeholder collaboration and technology-driven coordination
