Humans and robots in harmony? The impact of robotisation on quality of work within SMEs.

Abstract

The emergence of technological developments such as robotisation is transforming work in various sectors. It raises questions about what impact this has on the quality of work. This study examines the potential impact of robotisation on the quality of work within an SME in the metal sector. The central question of this study is as follows: How can quality of work be considered when implementing robots SMEs? This study uses Hackman & Oldham’s (1980) Job Characteristics Model and Grote & Guest’s (2017) Quality of Working Life framework to analyse the impact of technological innovation on quality of work. The research was conducted at an SME in the metal industry that is an all-round specialist in surface processing. This qualitative study, consisting of semistructured interviews with different employees and departments within the company provides practical recommendations for companies facing robotisation. This study contributes to the scientific literature on robotisation within SMEs and its impact on quality of work.
