Both the electoral system and the share of women in parliament are expected to influence the level of political corruption in a country. The electoral system, however, is also expected to influence the share of women in parliament. There could, therefore, be a mediation relationship at play between these concepts, where the electoral system only indirectly influences the level of political corruption through its effect on women in parliament. No previous research has investigated this potential relationship so far, so in this research I examined whether the share of women in parliament is a mediator in the relationship between the electoral system and political corruption. The electoral system is separated in three main elements: the electoral formula, the district magnitude and the ballot structure. None of these elements turn out to have a significant influence on political corruption when controlled for the effects of gender quota, economic development and the level of democracy. A mediation relationship was therefore not found either.en_US
