This thesis is about the structural and the cultural characteristics of local networks in a neighbourhood. The objective of this research is to gain insights in the structural and cultural characteristics of the local network in a neighbourhood, by combining social network analysis with the theory of ‘culture and society’. The combination of the two network studies enables the researcher to describe the meaning of networks within society. The research sets out to investigated how local initiatives and government interact with each other in local networks. The main findings are that three networks exist in a neighbourhood: the formal that exists of institutions, the semi-formal that exists of citizens’ organisations and the informal network that exists of local initiatives. The three networks are characterised by structural and cultural characteristics. First, the structural characteristics are defined by the type of local actors and relationship. Second, the cultural characteristics are defined by the different language and attitudes, the objectives and the way of organising the core businesses. This cultural and structural difference affects how networks interact with each other in the neighbourhood. The more two networks differ structural and cultural the lower the degree of interaction.en_US
