Abstract
This thesis examines the Ostrogothic Kingdom's influence on the cities of Ravenna and Milan from Theodoric's ascension to the Gothic War. Through a detailed analysis of municipal governance, water management, and bathing culture, it demonstrates the persistence and transformation of Roman institutions under Gothic rule. Ravenna, with its operational curia and maintained water systems, exemplifies continuity, benefiting from direct royal support. Milan, however, faced a decline in curial prestige and governmental prominence, influenced by the strong local church and reduced royal interest. The study highlights the duality in urban trajectories post-Roman Empire, illustrating how Gothic rule simultaneously preserved and altered Roman civic life. The findings underscore the complex nature of this transitional period, challenging the dichotomy of Roman continuity versus barbarian disruption.
