Abstract

This study assesses the necessary conditions for successful intrapreneurship within firm units, using Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA). Based on existing literature, five factors were analysed: entrepreneurial leadership style, financial capital, human capital, social capital and entrepreneurial culture. The research aimed to provide an answer to the following research question: “What are the necessary conditions for successful intrapreneurship within firm units and how can necessary condition analysis be applied to separate the need-to-have from the nice-to-have factors?” A quantitative research was conducted to a final sample of 51 respondents, each representing a distinct firm unit of a service organisation. The NCA revealed that a high level of human capital and entrepreneurial culture is necessary for successful intrapreneurship. In contrast, a high level of entrepreneurial leadership style, financial capital and social capital is not necessary for successful intrapreneurship. These findings offer theoretical implications by both confirming and challenging current assumptions about the importance of several organisational factors for successful intrapreneurship and provide practical implications for managers seeking to enhance intrapreneurial behavior within firm units
