Abstract
The rise of short-form video content has prompted research into its impact on body image, eating behavior, and more. However, little is known about the effects of exposure to weight-normative and gain-loss-framed content on adopting a healthy diet. This study aimed to fill this gap by conducting a 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment (N = 86) examining the effects of gain-loss framing and weight-normative messages in “What I Eat in A Day” videos on young adults’ attitudes towards a healthy diet, intentions to adopt a healthy diet, and perceived norms. Four experimental conditions were created including different combinations of the two variables (gain vs. loss frame and weight-normativity yes vs. no). Contrary to past studies, the results showed no influence of gain framing and weight-normative messages on attitudes, intentions, or perceived norms, nor was there an interaction between the factors. Therefore further research is needed.
