Abstract

This study explores the role of cybersecurity culture in shaping employees’ awareness of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) threats within a financial institution. This study used a qualitative research approach based on Schein’s organizational culture framework (1985) , Huang & Pearlson’s cybersecurity culture model (2019), and Kruger & Kearney’s Knowledge-Attitude-Behaviour (2006) Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and by analysing the concerned financial institution’s annual report of 2024. Findings indicate a generally strong cyberculture on all levels. However, average GenAI threat awareness did not align with this. GenAI threat awareness was uneven among employees, and no clear evidence of GenAI threat related behaviours at the individual level was found. While positive elements of the cybersecurity culture have the potential to enhance GenAI threat awareness, the same cultural weaknesses also appear to limit it. Two key challenges emerged: the first being a tendency to rely heavily on technological methods which reduces personal vigilance and the second being resource constraints that leave no dedicated funding for specialized GenAI training.
