Abstract

Chronic pain is a commonly reported problem in society. Several studies showed that chronic pain negatively influences cognitive performance. Furthermore, previous studies found an interaction effect between age and chronic pain on brain changes. Namely, particularly older-individuals with chronic pain have accelerating brain aging compared to younger individuals with chronic pain. In this study the interaction effect between chronic pain and age on cognitive performance was investigated. Moreover, the effect of the subjective severity of chronic pain on cognitive performance and the interaction effect with age were investigated. This study worked with an existing data base, 34 participants with chronic pain and 34 healthy controls matched by age, gender and education were included. The participants completed several cognitive tests. The data was statistically analyzed by a moderation analysis. No effects of chronic pain on memory and processing speed were observed in this study. Furthermore, no significant effect of the severity of chronic pain on cognition was found. Moreover, no interaction effect between age and chronic pain on cognitive performance and no interaction effect between the severity of chronic pain and age on cognitive performance was found.
