This research investigates the impact of retention options on the circular business models of organizations, aiming to improve contributions towards a more circular economy. A framework with 10 Retention options was used to measure holistic circular business models while also taking feasibility and stakeholder collaboration into account. Public data of 15 organizations within the Rijk van Nijmegen were qualitatively analysed. The 15 organizations are from different types of industry and are split between SME’s and large organizations. All organizations are trying to be circular and have outspoken information about their sustainability and circularity. This research finds that the organizations have mainly focused their circular strategies on the hierarchically most favorable short loop RO’s together with long loop RO R7 (Recycle) and mostly neglect the medium long loop RO’s. This neglecting can be largely contributed to the fact that the organizations struggle to identify and define the different circular activities regarding these RO’s, and therefore fail to describe and implement them in feasible ways and fail to cooperate with their stakeholders in these circular activities. The analysed organizations should adopt a uniform RO framework to create an understanding of their circularity to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses.
