Abstract

Diagnosing in mental health care is a difficult process due to the kind of information professionals get, time restraints and overlapping symptoms. In situations like these, professionals, as all humans, make use of short thinking routes such as confirmation bias, which is prone to produce errors. In clinical practice this can lead to incorrect diagnoses and can have tremendous consequences for the patient. People actually seem to differ in the amount of confirmation bias they use. One source of difference is general self-confidence. Therefor, we investigated the relationship between general self-confidence and confirmation bias in clinical psychology master students in a case-vignette task. General self-confidence predicted the amount of confirming information used by psychology-students. This finding can help to prevent psychologists from using confirmation bias, preventing misdiagnoses and prolonged suffering of the patient. Keywords: Clinical decision making, general self-confidence, confirmation bias
