Abstract
The current study aimed to further research the effect of imagery rescripting (ImRs) on eating
disorder (ED) symptoms to inform evidence-based treatment for EDs. It was predicted that an
ImRs intervention inducing self-compassion would be more effective than a positive memory
control intervention in reducing ED symptoms in a group of women at risk of developing an
ED. Furthermore, this study sought to explore the underlying mechanism of ImRs by
examining the mediating effect of the emotional believability of maladaptive core beliefs. It
was expected that ImRs inducing self-compassion would decrease the emotional believability
of maladaptive core beliefs and, in turn, reduce disordered eating. Forty-six women at
elevated risk of developing an ED were randomly assigned to either an ImRs intervention
inducing self-compassion or a positive memory control intervention. The results of a mixed
model ANOVA did not provide support for the effectiveness of ImRs inducing self
compassion; ED symptoms did not significantly reduce in either condition. Moreover, the
findings of a PROCESS macro mediation analysis showed no significant indirect effect of the
emotional believability of maladaptive core beliefs; the ImRs intervention did not
significantly decrease the emotional believability of maladaptive core beliefs and
subsequently reduce ED symptoms. Further research is required to rule out compromising
methodological factors in the current findings and to get a better understanding of the
conditions under which ImRs is effective and through which mechanisms this therapeutic
technique exerts its effects.
