dc.description.abstract | The erosion of ecosystems leads to a decreased world’s biodiversity. Furthermore, the lives of indigenous peoples and the ones of local communities are dependent on these ecosystems. They are experiencing severe threats and their knowledge is often overlooked. The expanding cultivation of soybeans in Brazil is recognised as one of the major drivers of deforestation. This research conducts an in-depth case study aimed at answering the research question: What does the telecoupled soy commodity chain between Brazil and the Netherlands look like through the lens of socio-environmentalism? This study will contribute to fill the knowledge gap on engagement of the local level on the basis of socio-environmentalism. This thesis adopts a qualitative and inductive approach. Within this strategy, a document analysis and semi-structured interviews are used as research techniques. Results have found that the soybean commodity chain between Brazil and the Netherlands is highly internationalised and can be represented as a complex system of actors with different interests, causes, effects, a spill-over system, and several flows. There can be concluded that Western and traditional knowledge systems should work together in order to engage the local level, which consists of valuable information in how to adapt the soybean commodity chain. | |
